“To teach details is to bring confusion; To establish the relationship between things is to bring knowledge”
These are the words of Maria Montessori, the woman who revolutionised pre-school teaching and education. She has given her name to a new school in Rimini, where works are to begin next week.
The new Montessori school will be built around 400 m in front of the original, which is to be demolished.
The new school will be built in wood, one of the natural materials (the others being fabric, paper, glass and metals) used in the Montessori method, offering the child all-round sensory experiences and daily opportunities to learn by play.
The building will be built on two levels over around 1800 m² (10 classrooms, library, teacher common room, toilets and internal garden) and will offer healthy and sustainable environment made of renewable materials and furnishings for helping to shape future citizens who respect nature and are aware of protecting the environment.
In architectural terms, the design is based entirely on a balanced and harmonious relationship of the materials used and the distribution of space, in full awareness that the building stands amongst the surrounding greenery.
A “passive”, white-plastered wall will form the north-west front, clad in autoclave-treated larch boards.
The south-west front, where you will find the classrooms, will be ventilated to increase comfort in summer.
As well as being anti-seismic, the building will be a nearly zero energy building, meaning with very low consumption. There will be no fossil fuel heating; the school will be entirely electric, running on solar panels.
