The Hospice Seràgnoli Foundation, Ferrari spa and the UniCredit Foundation come together for a cutting-edge project involving training, assistance and research.
Bologna, 19 October 2012 – To mark the tenth anniversary of the creation of the first ever Hospice Seràgnoli, the first campus for terminal patients has been developed in Bentivoglio (a few kilometres from Bologna), with the completion of the new residence halls, structures allocated to participants in national and international training programmes and to house some family nucleuses of the hospice patients. The intervention, carried out by the Hospice Seràgnoli Foundation, was also supported by Ferrari spa and the UniCredit Foundation.
The campus structures cover 10,000 m2 and stand in an area of 80,000 m2. They consist of the hospice, the residence halls and the Academy of Palliative Medicine, which deals with training and research in these matters. This is a decisive step resulting in the one and only Palliative Medicine project in Europe, where the combination of training and assistance in its mission guarantees patients and families an excellent level of care and attention, the result of a virtuous circle model in which non-profit foundations, institutions and supporters play a key role.
A workshop will be held on these matters in Bentivoglio on Friday, 19th October at 10.30 am, to celebrate the opening of the residences, with the participation of Maurizio Carrara (Chairman of the UniCredit Foundation), Pier Luigi Celli (General Manager of the Luiss University), Luca Cordero di Montezemolo (Chairman of Ferrari spa), Francesco Dal Co (Professor at the Venice IUAV), Ivano Dionigi (Rector of Bologna University), Vasco Errani (Chairman of the Regional Council of Emilia Romagna) and Francesco Ripa di Meana (General Manager of Ausl Bologna).
Defending the dignity of life through to the very end and relieving physical and psychological suffering in patients has been becoming increasingly urgent in recent years, both in the public opinion and according to institutions. In our country, only 15% of patients approaching the end of a chronic disease receive suitable treatment at the end of their lives thanks to palliative care and pain therapy, despite the fact that in 2010 Law no. 38 sanctioned the right of everyone not to suffer.
