The house in the vineyard - Ostra (AN)

The barn is a rural construction typical of our local agricultural area and is/was intended principally for the conservation of fodder, but also to house animals and machinery.

While wandering the winding country roads you’ll meet many people that form an important part of the economy of the Marche region.

Is it possible to turn our home into a barn? The answer is the challenge that this project has set itself that, both with a view to sustainability and as a link to the local area, aims to modernise the existing structure by adapting it to the new usage requirements.  The client plans to bring the old barn back to life “behind the house” and to live there.

The project arose therefore from an awareness and attention to the traces of the past, which give a strong identity to the present.

Starting from these prerequisites the design preserves, as far as possible, the original simple rectangular geometry, the original materials, without distorting the nature of “poor” and sometimes poorly finished materials.

The new materials used for the extension are kept clearly separate from the traditional materials of the existing building and the walls and the lofts are rebuilt in wood so as to leave the perforated brick as an external cladding.

The residential unit extends over two floors with an area of about 140 m2. On the ground floor the open spaces remain the same as before: the two largest, located one in front of the other, frame the vineyard at the back. The dining area occupies the space between the two glass walls and the living room takes up the area towards the entrance.

On the first floor we find the two rooms, the main room with a shower and private wardrobes and a shared bathroom.

The choice of a "Subissati Platform Frame" wooden structure for the building is the result of our research on natural materials that allow you to live your daily life in comfort, safety and with energy saving.

The work that we were responsible for was completed last week.
