Development of a wooden school. Unione dei Comuni Belvedere Ostrense, Morro D’Alba e San Marcello (AN).
The new year has begun with the 7th January opening of the new extension to the “A. Colocci” school complex.
This extension has been built entirely with a wooden support structure for all the part of the construction that stands “above ground”.
The building consists of 3 floors, with a reinforced concrete semi-basement and the other two floors built above ground using the “Platform Frame System” with wooden structures.
It was a major job, with the reinforced concrete basement measuring approximately 250 m2 and the two wooden floors above ground, 1100 m2.
The basement features both the area given over to housing the technological systems and 3 large rooms to be used as laboratories and archives; the floors above ground instead hold 10 classrooms, each with a capacity of 30 students and 2 blocks for toilets and maintenance rooms.
The building performance is also outstanding, with high energy efficiency, excellent acoustic comfort and fire-resistance featuring in the structures and materials used, in addition to optimum resistance to earthquakes, which is the main requirement of wooden buildings.
The technological systems are developed using floor radiating panels powered by heat pumps; the building is also fitted with a thermal solar system and ready prepared for the installation of photovoltaic panels.
We completed the construction providing a turnkey solution in approximately 180 working days, delivering before the start of the Christmas holidays so that lessons could begin regularly on Monday, 7th January 2013.
The public administrations are increasingly choosing to build schools out of wood, mainly because of the high performance offered by this material in structural terms (significant resistance to earthquakes and fire), its great energy efficiency, the comfort in terms of the microclimate within the building and a generalised desire to build natural, sustainable constructions.
